On the 11th of June, Dalian Laowai hosted another cultural meetup, on Thai culture. We had the honors of having Xing, who is a Thailand student studying at Dongbei University, teach us about Thailand. She presented the culture of Thailand and other Thailand students were there to back her up with her presentation. It was a phenominal experience as we learnt more about the culture and the ways of Thai people, very friendly and forever smiling.

We got to learn how to greeting Thai, what is “wai” and why “wai”. Thai Wai greeting.

Traditional dance, one Thai student showed us some of the movements.

As always we learnt a few words in Thai:

  1. Hello – Sa-Wad-Dee
  2. My name is – Chan-Shi
  3. Thank you – Kob-Khun
  4. You’re welcome – Duy-Kwam-Yin-Dee
  5. How are you?- Sa-Bai-Dee-Mai
  6. Yes – Chai
  7. No – Mai

Many people believe Thailand is called the “Land of Smiles” because of the friendly, happy-go-lucky and cheerful nature of its people. You can apparently smile at any Thai you pass by while walking on the street and that person will most likely smile back at you. It was a wonderful meet up and hope next time you join us!
