Tips Before You Take The Taxi

Before you get inside the taxi there are a couple things you need to prepare:

Cash: most Chinese taxis do not yet accept credit cards. In Dalian, if you order taxi through mobile apps or WeChat, they might accept the payment through WeChat Wallet. However, it better to have cash with you.

Your Destination: if you don’t speak Chinese very well, you’ll want to have the name of the place you’re going written down on a piece of paper. Most hotels can help you by writing down your destination in Chinese characters and you can pick up a card in the hotel lobby that says the name and address of that hotel. You also can try to search it through Baidu to know the precise address if you know some Chinese characters. When entering the taxi, just hand the card over and they’ll know where to go from there.

Chinese Taxi App and WeChat Taxi: If you can speak Chinese well, it's better to order taxi through those apps. However, you need to specify where are you at the moment, where do you want to go and how many people are going to enter the taxi.

Tips For Traveling With Taxi

In Dalian, a lot of taxis are using the Chinese apps and WeChat to get passengers. Due to this action, you might find it hard to get a taxi during rush hour since most of them already have passengers to pick up. However, it's easier to find taxi in several spot, for example hotel, restaurant or shopping mall.

Here are few tips after you get a taxi:

  • Always enter and exit from the passenger side: even when you're going to sit on the back. Sometimes the driver’s side door doesn’t even open. In Dalian, it is actually better to sit in the front seat. In case later you lose your things inside the taxi. You will be able to track it through police station and they will checked whether your face is being captured or not on the road's camera.

  • Check the taxi driver identification: if you're using a legal taxi, you will see a small identification near the window. Afterward, you can match the driver's actual face and the picture on the identification.

  • Make sure the driver drops the meter: moreover if you're taking taxi from airport, train station or bus station. Some drivers will try to take advantage of you and “bargain” a price with you. This is illegal and you’ll probably get ripped off if you do so. Make sure they “drop the flag” on the dashboard meter to start your service.

  • Pay Using Small Bills: if your fare is 10 RMB, don’t give the driver a 100 RMB bill. Many travelers have reported receiving fake bills in return and sometimes drivers won’t even have the correct amount of change.

  • Don’t Tip the Driver: this isn't a custom in China and the driver is not expecting it. Just say a thank you and be on your way.

  • Keep the Receipt: at least for a few days (you need to ask the driver to give you 'fapiao' to get the receipt). Why? The receipt has the vehicle number, so that if you happen to lose your wallet you can have your chinese friends to call up and locate the exact taxi driver to return your belongings.
